Editorial Standards

This page explains how the code tables and guides on FreeMorseCodeTranslator get written, checked, and corrected. It applies to every guide on the site, not just this page.

Where the code table comes from

The letter, digit, and punctuation mappings used across the site trace back to the International Morse Code table standardized by the ITU under recommendation M.1677-1. Where a page describes historical usage, such as the SOS signal or the retirement of the 500 kHz maritime distress frequency, that is checked against publicly documented history rather than repeated from memory.

How edge cases in the converter are decided

The tool makes a handful of deliberate choices that are documented on the pages they affect: it ignores letter case, it silently drops characters it does not recognize when converting text to morse, and it rejects a malformed morse string outright rather than guessing at the intended letter. These are treated as editorial decisions, not bugs, because a guessing decoder would produce confident wrong answers. If a reader thinks one of these choices is wrong for a use case we have not considered, that is exactly the kind of message the contact page is for.

Corrections

Reported errors are checked against the source standard before anything changes. A wrong table entry gets fixed on the page and, if the error was significant, a note is added describing what changed. We do not silently rewrite history; if a past version of a guide was materially wrong, the correction says so.

Guides on this site are written by Marcus Vance; see the authors page. The site is owned by Chris Terry under Encore Editorial, who is not involved in writing or editing article content and is credited only as site owner.

How the site makes money

The site runs ads through Google AdSense. Advertising has no influence over what the code tables say or how a guide describes a technical edge case; the ad slots are placed separately from the written content and do not change based on which advertiser is showing.
